Shared clout ≠ shared values

Love, Death + Robots poster for the episode Can’t Stop: a marionette bassist above a festival crowd

Just watched the first episode of Love, Death & Robots Volume 4. I’m a fan of both LD&R and Chili Peppers, and if you’re a fan of either, you might find this interesting.

Directed by David Fincher, which I’m also a fan of - the episode is a full-blown animated tribute to RHCP’s legendary live performance of “Can’t Stop” at Slane Castle back in 2003. Cool, right?

But here’s the thing: fans of the show were left confused, and fans of the band were underwhelmed. The episode has an IMDB rating of 4.1 as of today, the lowest in the show’s history. I did a quick dive into reactions across Reddit, IMDB, and YouTube, and it turns out, the episode’s low rating isn’t just about taste. It’s about misaligned subcultures.

In the age of collabs, we often forget that shared clout ≠ shared values. If the fans don’t care about the same things, a collaboration can fall flat, no matter how high-profile.

I put together a 5-minute AI audio summary about this, it’s a fun listen: [AUDIO LINK — Reza to send]
